Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Bill Traylor, Jacob Lawrence | From Frederick Douglass to Ta-Nehisi Coates: A workshop series exploring race using texts as a window into history with Susan Stein

Artists of the Harlem Renaissance: Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Bill Traylor, Jacob Lawrence | From Frederick Douglass to Ta-Nehisi Coates: A workshop series exploring race using texts as a window into history with Susan Stein

This workshop considers Reconstruction, The Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, and artists and writers who worked to bring their own voices into the American experience to chart a path forward.

Join resident teaching artist Susan Stein to explore literature and art created by African-American writers, artists and thinkers, as they wrote and drew the pain and beauty of being Black in America during the Jim Crow era.  We will read excerpts from well-known and lesser-known texts and look closely at some paintings and drawings to help us begin conversations that bring us into a piece of history often overlooked in classrooms. These workshops and the lessons we create will aim to foster empathy and empower teachers to bring their students into these vital conversations.
