10am-12pm: Magda Brown

Magda Brown was born in Miskolc, Hungary. When she was 17 years old, she was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau with her entire family. She survived Auschwitz, a German labor camp, and a death march, before finally being liberated by the US Army. In 1946, she came to the United States and settled in Chicago, where she has lived ever since.

In the morning session of our virtual seminar, Magda will tell her story and answer questions from viewers tuning in around the country.

1-3pm: Survivor Interactive Demo

For decades, hearing firsthand accounts from survivors has been an integral part of learning about the Holocaust. But around the world, educators are trying to come up with meaningful ways to keep survivor stories alive when the survivors themselves are no longer around to tell them. To address this, the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, using technology developed by the USC Shoah Foundation through their Dimensions in Testimony program, is implementing a state-of-the-art-solution: allowing visitors to have a conversation with recorded Survivor. This first-in-the-world display was created by filming 360-degree recordings of survivors answering thousands of potential students questions. Visitors to the museum are able to ask the recorded survivors questions, and the recording can answer them directly using the wealth of pre-recorded knowledge.

In the afternoon session of our seminar, we will be conducting a demonstration of this amazing technology.
