Sexual harassment and assault affects millions of K-12 and college students every year.
Unfortunately, our schools and campuses may soon become more dangerous for students and survivors.
Education Secretary Betsy Devos just released regulations that will undermine survivors’ rights by changing fundamental aspects of Title IX, the landmark federal civil rights law that protects students who are victims of sexual harassment.
Among other things, the proposed regulation will:
- reduce school liability and cut the number of sexual harassment investigations conducted in schools each year
- stack the process against survivors
- and discourage survivors from reporting their sexual assault by creating cruel and unnecessary obstacles
These changes would reverse decades of hard-won progress in combatting sexual violence and working toward gender equity on campus.
The good news: we can still do something about it!
