SING A NEW LIGHT is a new program to commemorate those souls who were killed in the October 27, 2018 shooting at the Tree of Life Building in Pittsburgh, PA. New Light Congregation, established in 1909, was the smallest of the three synagogues affected. Three of the New Light members who were murdered, Dan Stein, Rich Gottfried and Mel Wax, were pillars of the congregation. Dan and Rich formed the choir. In our martyr’s memory SING A NEW LIGHT was born, a joyful musical series engaging both New Light Congregation and the Pittsburgh Jewish Community, whereby Jewish college a cappella choirs from around the country will visit Pittsburgh to join the New Light Shabbat services and conduct a community wide performance. In addition, the choir will conduct workshops with local Pittsburgh community partners to re-dedicate the choir.
We are proud to welcome Yale University’s Magevet return to Pittsburgh to kick off the program. Founded in 1993, Magevet is one of the nation’s premiere Jewish a cappella singing groups. A coed ensemble comprised of undergraduate students at Yale University, Magevet is known for its sweet blend of voices, unique arrangements, and lighthearted sense of humor. The group’s diverse repertoire spans modern Israeli pop and Renaissance choral pieces to Yiddish folk tunes and Zionist classics. The members of Magevet are equally diverse: engineers and historians, Jews and Gentiles, New Yorkers and Californians, all united by camaraderie and a love of singing.
ABOUT NEW LIGHT CONGREGATION
New Light Congregation (Ohr Chodesh) was first chartered by Romanian immigrants arriving in Pittsburgh’s Hill District in 1909. In 1955, the congregation built a new synagogue on the corner of Forbes and Beechwood in Squirrel Hill. In 2016, New Light sold their building and moved to the Tree of Life Building on the corner of Wilkins and Shady. Following the mass shooting in the Tree of Life building, where three New Light congregants were murdered, the congregation moved to Beth Shalom, on the corner of Beacon and Shady.
