Throughout the 20th century, those struggles played out locally and nationally. Come hear Barbara Burstin’s take on them. Barbara is on the faculties of the history departments at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, teaching courses on the American Jewish Experience, the U.S. and the Holocaust and the History of Pittsburgh. She has also taught courses within the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and has spoken extensively throughout the community.

About Barbara Burstin
Barbara is a past chair of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, the Hillel-Jewish University Center and the Holocaust Commission.
She has adopted Pittsburgh as her home, having been born and raised in New York. Barbara holds a PhD in history from the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s in history education from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Vassar College.
She and her husband, David, reside in Squirrel Hill.
In addition to teaching, Barbara has written a number of books, including After the Holocaust: The Migration of Polish Jews and Christians to Pittsburgh, Steel City Jews: A History of the Pittsburgh Jewish community 1840-1915, Steel City Jews in Prosperity, Depression, and War: A history of Pittsburgh Jewish community 1915-1950 and Jewish Pittsburgh, which is part of Arcadia Publishing’s Image of America Series.
