The Jewish Music of Leonard Bernstein presented by Flavio Chamis
Sunday, November 3 @ 3:00 PM - 4:30 PMFree
Throughout his entire composing career, Leonard Bernstein steadily produced a number of Jewish inspired works. Judaism always permeated his life and work, and he even wrote music for the Shabbat service. At the same time, his connection with Israel started before the foundation of the State, as the first concert he conducted with the Israel Philharmonic happened in 1947, when the orchestra was still called “Palestine Philharmonic Orchestra”. From that time on, he conducted the orchestra yearly until his death in 1990. Flavio Chamis was a personal friend of Mr. Bernstein, having worked for him as a conducting assistant on several occasions. Mr. Chamis, who studied at the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv, will share some of the exclusive personal recordings and mementos collected during the years of their friendship. The event is sponsored by the Dor Hadash Adult Education Committee.
