DESCRIPTION:Be inspired by Meryl Ainsman and Cindy Shapira\, two of the trailblazing women whose visionary work as Board Chairs of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh helped charter the organization’s course and shape the Federation’s role within the Greater Pittsburgh Jewish community. \nCindy Shapira is president of the Shapira Foundation and formerly served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh\, vice chair of the Jewish Federations of North America board\, executive committee member of the Jewish Agency for Israel\, and board member of the Jewish Funders Network. She is a director on the Birthright-Taglit governing board. She currently is chairwoman of PA’s State System of Higher Education board of governors\, the founding chair of the PA State Board of Higher Education\, a vice-chair of the Brandeis University board of trustees\, a director of the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities\, and a board member of the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Cindy holds a B.A. from Wellesley College\, and MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School\, and an Ed.D from the University of Pennsylvania. \n  \nMeryl Ainsman has spent most of her adult life in leadership roles in the local and global Jewish community. Meryl served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh from 2017-2020 after serving as a board member for several year\, and she is now Chair of the Buncher Institute for Leadership Development (BuILD). She has also served as Board Chair of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh (2007-2010) and has served on the boards of Jewish Federations of North America and the Global JCC Association. Meryl currently sits on the boards of Tree of Life\, Inc. and the Eradicate Hate Global Summit. Meryl is the retired manager of the law firm of Ainsman Levine\, and still maintains her role as the Executive Director of the Philip Chosky Foundation.

Her books on literary subjects include an edition of Jacob Glatstein’s two-volume fictional memoir\, The Glatstein Chronicles (2010)\, The Modern Jewish Canon: A Journey through Literature and Culture (2003) and A Little Love in Big Manhattan (1988). She is also the author of two political studies\, If I Am Not for Myself: The Liberal Betrayal of the Jews (1992) and Jews and Power (2007). Her latest book\, No Joke: Making Jewish Humor\, a volume in the Tikvah-sponsored Library of Jewish Ideas\, was recently published by Princeton University Press.

The centerpiece of the concert is a commissioned piece by composer Alyssa Weinberg entitled Kol Nidrei\, a sacred and moving piece of Jewish liturgy\, as well as music and poetry that speak to the human capacity to overcome violence. DESCRIPTION:Join the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh for a 20-minute screening of “Perseverance\,” the newest edition in PA Cyber’s Emmy-nominated Moments in History series that tells the story of local Holocaust survivor Melvin Goldman (z”l). The screening will be followed by a conversation with Melvin’s daughter and author of Perseverance: One Holocaust Survivor’s Journey from Poland to America\, Lee Goldman Kikel\, and filmmaker Scot Rutledge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Film:\n\n\nMelvin Goldman spent five years in the Jewish ghetto and concentration camps. He was 21 years old when Allied Forces liberated the concentration camps in 1945. He weighed 85 pounds and could not walk. He recovered for several years in Germany\, and then a kind stranger sponsored his move to the United States\, where he eventually raised a family and owned a jewelry store in Squirrel Hill. Goldman’s story is captured in the video “Perseverance\,” the newest edition in PA Cyber’s Emmy-nominated Moments in History series\, which captures first-hand accounts of chapters in time. Goldman recorded his memories on cassette tapes in the late 1970s. In them\, he had stated he wanted his story preserved in a book. His daughter honored his request and frequently tells his story at events. Her book was adapted into a play and performed at the New Hazlett Theater Center for Performing Arts in Pittsburgh in 2023.
