Indonesia – Lombok Earthquakes Situation Update #1
August 8, 2018
- On Sunday, August 5th a 6.9 Magnitude earthquake struck Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara
- At least 12 aftershocks greater than magnitude 4.0 have been recorded
- The earthquake was felt in Lombok island, Sumbawa Island, Bali Island and up the eastern part of East Java
- As of August 8th, the death toll was 131 people with expectations that the number will increase as search & rescue efforts continue
- Nearly 2,500 people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries and more than 156,000 people are displaced
- There are electricity outages throughout Lombok, hindering communication and response efforts
JDC Responds
- JDC has been working in Indonesia since the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, focusing on disaster risk reduction and response
- JDC just completed a flagship program funded by USAID's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance that trained local communities in disaster management and psychosocial support
- JDC is partnering with Yakkum to provide those impacted by the earthquakes in Lombok with the following critical assistance:
- Shelter kits for 1,000 families
- Medical & food assistance to 1,000 people
- Electrical generators
- JDC is immediately mobilizing to send its psychosocial experts to the region to further assess the needs
