This role will assist in providing strategic and creative leadership to strengthen the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh (“Federation”) in the realm of community relations. This includes local, national, and international activities, advocacy for Jewish policy issues, and strengthening connections both inside and outside of the Jewish Community. The mission of the Community Relations Council (“CRC”) is to promote harmonious relations and mutual understanding within and beyond Pittsburgh’s Jewish community and to support the State of Israel. The Community Relations Council Associate will report to the Director of Community Relations while working with leaders and volunteers within the community.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is the central fundraising and community planning organization for the Pittsburgh Jewish community. We provide funding to local and overseas partner agencies, as well as independent programs that provide health and human welfare services. The goal of the Community Relations Council (CRC) is to:
- Foster amicable relationships between the Jewish community and other ethnic, racial, and religious groups.
- Enlist government, public and community support for Jewish policy issues within Pittsburgh and Israel.
- Develop public affairs initiatives and vehicles for community engagement for the Federation.
- Advocate for positions on legislation affecting the Jewish community and promote opportunities for Pittsburgh-Israel collaboration.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assist the CRC Director in serving the Community Relations Council, Greater Pittsburgh Jewish Council, Urban Affairs Foundation, 412 Black Jewish Collaborative, Gun Violence Prevention Task force, and other committees and task forces identified by the CRC.
- Collaborate with CRC, the Federation Board and other community leadership to raise and address issues of concern to the Jewish community and the community at large.
- Oversee staffing and programming for the Young Leaders CRC Committee.
- Coordinate the Pittsburgh-Israel Campus Fellows Program (Campus Ambassadors) in partnership with Hillel JUC.
- Conduct outreach to the LGBTQ+ community and other diverse communities, as assigned by the CRC Director.
- Assist the CRC Director in developing and managing CRC programs, including correspondence with membership, agenda planning and execution, development of educational materials, recruitment of speakers and attendees, and preparation of promotional materials.
- Engage with diverse constituencies in the Jewish community to develop leadership for the CRC that reflects political, religious, and geographic balance.
- Works to ensure a deliberative and respectful process to debating complex issues and shaping consensus.
- Manages the CRC social media accounts including Facebook and Twitter.
- Assist in monitoring and interpreting community responses to a broad range of domestic and international issues to help craft when necessary appropriate responses.
- Research and provide information, technical assistance, and guidance on a broad array of domestic and international issues as required for community education, engagement, and mobilization.
- Assist in maintaining strong ties with elected officials, the media, religious and civic leaders with the community.
- Monitors media outlets while collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure that the Jewish public agenda is appropriately and accurately covered.
- Develops and executes social media outreach messaging on CRC related issues.
- Leverage other community and Federation programs for synergy regarding engagement and advocacy.
- Assist in recruiting new leaders and volunteers and deepen the engagement of existing volunteers.
- Manage programs to educate the broader Jewish community and the Pittsburgh community, about the dangers of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.
- Direct interfaith programming, particularly between the Jewish and Catholic communities in Pittsburgh.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of Israeli history and current affairs, as well as anti-Semitism.
- Must be able to work with diverse populations while acting as a representative for the Jewish community and the Federation.
- Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.
- Superior communication skills both oral and written with a strong emphasis on presentation skills.
- Knowledge of – and passion for – the Jewish community and Jewish issues.
- Ability to forge and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders that may include:
- Media outlets, public officials, and community representatives.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Strong commitment to the Federation’s mission and an ability to interpret this mission.
Education, Training or Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Candidates with degrees in Public Administration, Communications, Jewish studies or Non-Profit.
- Management will be strongly considered.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in Jewish programming or advocacy.
- Preferred experience in pro-Israel advocacy.
- Recent college graduates are encouraged to apply.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS
The nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. This role will have prolonged periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer. Also requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, and prepare work documents. Travel by automobile will be required regularly. Work usually performed in a general office environment, but currently employees are working from home. The position requires availability for additional hours at various times throughout the year. Requires regular participation and attendance at organization-sponsored events and meetings including nights and weekends. Work is performed in a general office environment, currently employees are working remotely. This position does not require heavy lifting over 15 pounds or standing for extended periods.
