Adult Learning Associate (Part Time)

The Jewish Federation offers adult Jewish learning classes online and in person to engage people in Pittsburgh in Jewish life in ways they find meaningful. This part-time position supports these classes and the primary teacher (the “Gefsky Community Scholar”) through customer service, recruitment and administration such as scheduling and technology management. The Adult Learning Associate will be the primary point of contact for people interested in courses and individual classes and will also serve a critical outreach role to Jewish Pittsburgh, recruiting potential class participants by promoting the classes and programs. This position will be 15 hours per week. This is a temporary position with an undetermined end date. 

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is the central fundraising and community planning organization for the Pittsburgh Jewish community. We provide funding to local and overseas core partners, as well as independent programs that provides education, security and health and human welfare services.


Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborate with the Gefsky Community Scholar and Federation marketing staff on engagement strategies. 
  • Assist Community Scholar with Jewish learning and outreach programming. 
  • Work collaboratively with the Federation marketing department staff on engagement activities and programs. 
  • Work with vendors, site managers and caterers to plan meetings, trainings and events. 
  • Maintain database and calendar with all dates for courses, events and programs. 
  • Keep track of attendance for all Community Scholar courses, events and programs. 
  • Set up and oversee online registration for all Community Scholar courses, events and programs. 
  • Serve as an advocate for Adult Learning, proactively reaching out to individuals in the community and encouraging them to take courses in our program. 
  • Periodically attend classes to ensure participant satisfaction. 
  • On occasion, seek potential new faculty members, hire and orient / train them. Arrange demonstration lessons for prospective faculty as needed. 
  • Conduct orientation for new students as needed. 
  • Provide email, online and phone customer service for students, including ensuring they have the information they need to register, pay, attend (including by teleconference) and access class recordings. 
  • Create meaningful connections with students and facilitate their financial support. 
  • Handle payments, maintain budget and ensure Adult Learning meets financial goals. 
  • Support periodic in-person events such as invited scholars, donor recognition and other such events. 
  • Lead the organization for annual Tikkun Leil Shavuot night of learning in collaboration with Events Manager.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift and carry items less than 20 pounds. 
  • Ability to sit or stand at a computer for long periods. 
  • Ability to monitor virtual meetings effectively on teleconference and meeting platforms such as Zoom, ensuring meetings run smoothly and addressing any potential security concerns or disruptions in real-time. 


  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in administrative support or customer service; experience using a computer and using electronic communication.
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills.
  • Superior communication skills in writing, teleconference and in person.
  • Ability to multitask and to respond quickly and efficiently to customer requests.
  • Facility with or ability to learn quickly the Zoom meeting platform as an expert user.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 suite, with at least basic skills in Microsoft Excel in particular.
  • Knowledge of the Jewish community and preferred familiarity with Jewish holidays, traditions and texts.
  • Preferred knowledge of basic principles of marketing.
  • Periodic ability to work evenings and/or Sundays for special events or classes.


The position is temporary, part-time (15 hours per week), hourly nonexempt.  This position has a competitive hiring range $24 per hour, commensurate with experience.
