Director, Buncher Institute for Leadership Development (BuILD)

Galvanize the Pittsburgh Jewish community by leading the new Buncher Institute for Leadership Development (BuILD) which will empower both lay and professional leaders to shape their Jewish leadership journeys and exemplify excellence, ensuring a flourishing and philanthropic Pittsburgh Jewish community where everyone feels included, supported, and inspired.

The DIRECTOR of BuILD will set a vision and be the architect of an overarching lay and professional leadership development strategy and framework that will build and bolster a leadership pipeline for the wider Jewish community, positioning Federation as the engine for talent development. The leadership framework will focus on the critical skills, competencies, and capacities needed for leadership of effective and impactful 21st century flourishing Jewish communities.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as an inspiring leader for the Buncher Institute for Leadership Development, motivating the development of volunteer and professional leaders and advocating for leadership as a community priority.
  • Cultivate and deepen partnerships with community stakeholders, including but not limited to: The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, its system of agencies, local synagogues, volunteer and professional leaders, and other Jewish organizations.

  • Develop and implement a leadership development plan that outlines goals, objectives, strategies, and specific metrics to evaluate success.
  • Engage a lay leadership committee to support the work and ensure excellence.


  • Excellent leadership, organizational, analytical, and community-building skills with a demonstrated ability to lead with vision and successfully manage change.

  • Design, deliver and evaluate inclusive and accessible leadership programs that support the mission of BuILD.

  • Exceptional facilitation skills both in person and virtually.

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.

  • The ability to inspire diverse stakeholders.

  • Strong Jewish knowledge and the ability to integrate Jewish values and leadership vision.

  • Proven success in navigating lay/professional relationship dynamics at various levels of leadership.

  • Deep understanding of fiscal management and comfort developing financial resources.


  • A great communicator with the ability to motivate and inspire others.

  • Strong knowledge of adult learning theory and instructional design.

  • Experience conducting needs assessments to develop new leadership training programs.

  • Extensive experience collaborating with others to deliver robust training programs.

  • The ability to influence others with strong ethics and professionalism.

  • A lifelong learner with a passion for leadership, service and supporting others.

  • Dedicated to strengthening the Jewish community.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

  • Proficient in the use of online web conferencing platforms Teams, Zoom, WebEx.


  • Master’s degree preferred; relevant commensurate experience will be considered.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in non-profit management, leadership development, organizational development, or consulting.


  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • May be required to lift 10-15 pounds at times.

  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

  • Local travel required to facilitate BuILD sponsored training or events.

  • A valid PA Driver's license must be maintained during employment.


This position has a competitive salary of $ 80,000 to 120,000 to commensurate with experience. The Federation offers a competitive benefits package when compared to other non-profits in the region.
