DESCRIPTION:Dr. Anika Walke (Carnegie Mellon University) delivers the Third Annual Renee Sachs Memorial Lecture in Holocaust Studies. The memory of the Holocaust and World War II in Belarus is deeply inscribed into the local landscape. The lecture introduces works by the Yiddish writer Hirsh Reles and memorials created by architect Leonid Levin to explore how legacies of systematic violence shape the natural and built environment in the former Soviet Union.

SUMMARY:Jewish Farming and Religious Alternative Food Movements in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Religious people are coming together across religious and non-religious differences to change the food system. In this lecture\, Adrienne Krone will provide insights into these religious communities from her new book Free-Range Religion: Alternative Food Movements and Religious Life in the United States. The book is an ethnographic exploration of four religious alternative food movement communities. In this lecture\, Adrienne Krone will focus on the two Jewish community farming communities in the book\, which are the Adamah Farm Fellowship at the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in northwest Connecticut and Pearlstone Center in Reisterstown\, Maryland. \nAdrienne Krone is Associate Professor of Environmental Science & Sustainability and Religious Studies at Allegheny College\, where she is also Chair of Jewish Studies.
