SUMMARY:Crossroads: The Israel Edition - Educator and Jewish Communal Professionals Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Across the field of Jewish education\, conversations about Israel have become increasingly complex. Educators and learners alike are searching for language and confidence to navigate a topic that can feel emotionally charged and polarizing. How do we teach pride without ignoring pain? How do we model solidarity that comforts and also changes lives? How can love and critique coexist? \nThis half-day training gathers educators and Jewish communal professionals together to explore these questions. Drawing on M²’s Conflict Pedagogy\, participants will learn how to transform tension and disagreement into meaningful educational opportunities. Rather than avoiding conflict\, they will practice how to hold multiple truths\, guide students through values-based reflection and design learning experiences that invite curiosity\, empathy and conviction. \nAt the center of the workshop are Crossroads: The Israel Edition cards: a set of forty beautifully designed\, values-driven scenarios that mirror the full scope of the student experience. Each scenario presents a real-world dilemma involving competing values such as belonging and integrity\, pride and safety or empathy and responsibility. Each participant will receive a full deck to bring back to their school or organization\, enabling them to use the cards in classrooms\, retreats or informal settings to spark nuanced dialogue and deepen connection. \nThe Crossroads training helps educators and Jewish communal professionals to move beyond fear or paralysis toward confidence and creativity\, empowering them to model for their learners that wrestling with Israel is not a sign of division\, but a pathway to deeper understanding and stronger Jewish identity. \nA kosher lunch will be provided.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Optimal Hope in Ourselves and in Others
DESCRIPTION:With Rabbi Leon Morris\, President of Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies\nHope can be challenging to cultivate at any time\, but all the more so in the aftermath of war and violence. Yet\, the obligation of hope is deeply ingrained in our biblical and rabbinic tradition. Some of the best examples can be found in sources that are distant to most of us—tachanun\, messianism and mourning for the Temple. \nRabbi Leon Morris\, a renowned teacher and leading voice in contemporary Jewish learning\, will guide us as we mine texts and practices that can offer us and our communities’ insight and wisdom toward resilience and strength. \nThis study session is in memory of the eleven lives lost on October 27\, 2018: Joyce Fienberg\, Richard Gottfried\, Rose Mallinger\, Jerry Rabinowitz\, Cecil Rosenthal\, David Rosenthal\, Bernice Simon\, Sylvan Simon\, Dan Stein\, Irving Younger and Melvin Wax. \nMay their memories be for a blessing.

SUMMARY:As a Jew YAD Watch Party
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled.\nYAD and CRC invite Young Adults (22-45) to enjoy dinner while we join  Gefsky Community Scholar Rabbi Danny Schiff via Zoom for a powerful conversation with Sarah Hurwitz\, former speechwriter for Barack and Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton\, as she shares insights from her bold new book\, As a Jew: Reclaiming Our Story from Those Who Blame\, Shame and Try to Erase Us (coming September 2025). In this deeply personal work\, Hurwitz explores her journey back to Judaism—confronting antisemitism\, rediscovering Jewish wisdom and embracing her heritage with pride. \nAttendees will receive a copy of As a Jew: Reclaiming Our Story from Those Who Blame\, Shame\, and Try to Erase Us. \nSarah Hurwitz is the author of Here All Along: Finding Meaning\, Spirituality\, and a Deeper Connection to Life – in Judaism (After Finally Choosing to Look There)—which was a finalist for two National Jewish Book Awards and for the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature—and of As a Jew: Reclaiming Our Story From Those Who Shame\, Blame\, and Try To Erase Us\, which won the Natan Notable Book Award. She was a White House speechwriter from 2009 to 2017\, starting out as a senior speechwriter for President Barack Obama and then serving as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama. Prior to working in the White House\, Hurwitz was the chief speechwriter for Hillary Clinton on her 2008 presidential campaign. Hurwitz is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School and has completed training to be a chaplain\, which she does on a volunteer basis at a hospital near her home.
