Code of Conduct for Pride Parade Marching Block

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh’s Community Relations Council (CRC) is committed to fostering inclusivity, respect and unity. As participants in the Pittsburgh Pride Parade, we aim to embody these values while celebrating diversity and advocating equality. This year’s unique focus on MISPACHA (FAMILY) celebrates that transgender, intersex and nonbinary people are important and valued members of our Jewish community. This event is inclusive of all ages and families with children are invited to attend.

All participants in our marching block are expected to adhere to the following guidelines:

Respect and Inclusivity

  • Treat all individuals with dignity and respect, regardless of their race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or ability.
  • Avoid any language, signs, or actions that could be perceived as offensive, discriminatory, or exclusionary.

Safety and Cooperation

  • Follow all instructions from parade organizers, security personnel and event stewards to ensure a safe and orderly event.
  • Refrain from any behavior that could endanger yourself or others, including the use of illegal substances or excessive alcohol consumption. To ensure safety, all participants are required to be sober for this event.

Positive Representation

  • Represent the Community Relations Council (CRC) and its values with pride and integrity.
  • Ensure that all banners, signs and materials carried in the parade align with the CRC’s mission of promoting understanding, combating hate and building bridges across communities.

Peaceful Advocacy

  • Celebrate diversity and advocate for equality in a peaceful and non-confrontational manner.
  • Avoid engaging in arguments or confrontations with other parade participants or spectators.

Environmental Responsibility

  • Dispose of litter responsibly and strive to minimize waste.
  • Use sustainable materials for banners, signs and decorations whenever possible.

Dress Code and Decorum

  • Wear attire that is respectful and appropriate for an all-ages, family-friendly event.
  • Wear attire that is appropriate for the weather and for standing on a concrete surface for a prolonged period. Hats, tennis shoes, and breathable fabrics are encouraged.

Commitment to Community Values

  • Uphold the CRC’s commitment to combating antisemitism, racism, and all forms of hate.
  • Promote unity and understanding among diverse communities through your actions and words.

This code of conduct ensures that our participation in the Pride Parade reflects the CRC’s dedication to creating a more inclusive and equitable society. By registering for this event, I agree that I am responsible for my own behavior and that failure to adhere to these values may result in my removal from this marching block.
