In recent years, the safety of Jewish community facilities has become critical, especially in the aftermath of tragic events like the attack on three congregations at the Tree of Life building on October 27, 2018.
This horrific event left many community members questioning their safety when engaging in activities at their houses of worship. Within recent years, antisemitic graffiti and verbal altercations only exacerbated the sentiment that being openly Jewish was unsafe. But rather than retreat in fear, our community has responded with determination, unity and action.
Securing Our Future Through Generous Support
Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Jewish Federation's Community Security team, our community has secured over $2.2 million in funding to strengthen safety measures. This includes $1.1 million from the RK Mellon Foundation, Heinz Endowments, Hillman Foundations, Charles M. Morris Charitable Trust, and other private donors; and $1.1 in a matching state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant.
These funds are already making a meaningful difference—supporting projects that protect thousands of individuals each year.
Where the Money Goes
BluePoint Emergency Response System
Thirty-six Jewish community locations in Pittsburgh have installed the BluePoint emergency response system, enabling immediate lockdowns and direct communication with law enforcement. Three more locations are pending installation. This technology ensures that in moments of crisis, help is just a button away.
Community Training
In 2024, the Federation Security team successfully completed ninety-three Community Trainings, reaching over 7,580 individuals. These sessions covered a wide range of topics, including situational awareness, emergency preparedness and response protocols for various threats. Equipping community members with the knowledge and confidence to act in times of crisis, fosters a culture of vigilance and resilience across our institutions.
Facility Security Assessments
Twenty comprehensive Facility Security Assessments were completed throughout the year. These evaluations are critical in identifying vulnerabilities in physical infrastructure, access control, surveillance systems and emergency response plans. Each assessment results in a tailored set of recommendations, helping organizations prioritize improvements and apply for relevant security grants.
Virtual Block Watch
To enhance real-time situational awareness, the Virtual Block Watch program was launched. This initiative leverages technology and community partnerships to monitor and report suspicious activity. By creating a network of engaged observers and integrating digital tools, security efforts can extend beyond the reach of physical boundaries and foster a proactive approach to safety.
Weekly Community Newsletter
The weekly Federation Security Newsletter keeps the community informed and prepared. It includes timely updates on local and national threats, safety tips, training opportunities and highlights from our ongoing initiatives. This consistent communication ensures that community members remain engaged and aware of evolving security dynamics.
Incident Response
In 2024, the Federation Security team responded to 283 incidents of antisemitism. Each case was addressed with urgency and care, involving coordination with law enforcement, support for affected individuals and follow-up to ensure safety and accountability. Our response efforts are not only reactive but also serve as a foundation for advocacy, education and long-term prevention.
Safe Spaces for Families
At the Jewish Community Center’s Family Park in Monroeville, where over 650 children attend summer camp and families gather every weekend, new fencing, security cameras and a modern alarm system have transformed the space into a safe haven for all.
A Community Empowered
These upgrades are more than just physical improvements—they’re a source of renewed confidence. With visible security in place, community members can once again participate in religious and cultural life without fear. Up to 10,000 individuals benefit directly from these enhancements and the ripple effect touches as many as 59,000 across the broader Jewish community.
Standing Strong Together
The Jewish Federation’s comprehensive approach to safety—ranging from infrastructure upgrades to proactive threat monitoring—has fortified our community against rising antisemitism. Rather than retreat, we are moving forward with pride, resilience and unity.
