Statement from the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh
The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh condemns the language used in a social media post shared by Allegheny County Councilmember Bethany Hallam, implying that she believes she is not required to “be civil with Zionists.” Calls for uncivil behavior against Zionists for the perceived actions of the State of Israel meets the definition of antisemitism, as it would be holding Zionists (often Jews) responsible for the actions of a foreign government. This occurred while the Jewish community is still in shock from last week’s murders in Washington, DC of two Israeli embassy employees who were attending a conference at the Capital Jewish Museum on advancing peace in the Middle East.
Zionism, the belief in the Jewish people’s right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland, is a core part of Jewish identity for most in our community. To target “Zionists” with threats of uncivil behavior and dehumanizing rhetoric, is to endanger Jews everywhere, regardless of their views on Israeli policy or politics.
Unfortunately, Councilmember Hallam has a history of justifying violence against Israelis. In October of 2023, Ms. Hallam reposted a celebratory video of Hamas terrorists breaking down the security gate on October 7, 2023, leading to the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust. The terrorists depicted in the video ultimately murdered, kidnapped and raped Israeli civilians, including children. After 598 days, 58 Israelis are still being held hostage in deplorable conditions in Gaza.
We call upon other elected County leaders to condemn Ms. Hallam’s post and all rhetoric that aims to ostracize and discriminate against those who believe in Israel’s right to exist and Jewish self-determination.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh stands firmly against hate in all its forms and remains committed to building a community grounded in safety, respect and dialogue. We call on all individuals and institutions to reject language that promotes violence and to engage in conversations that advance dignity, justice and peace.
