The East End Food Co-op’s board of directors has voted to reject a boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign that has sought to pressure the Co-op for nearly two years. The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh commends the board for this decision and thanks the many community members and organizations who stood together to ensure divisive tactics do not take root in Pittsburgh’s local institutions.

This outcome did not happen in isolation. It reflects the strength of collective action — neighbors, partners, and community leaders who believe that respect, dialogue, and collaboration must prevail over division. The Federation was proud to be part of that coalition.

“BDS efforts are designed to isolate and divide, but Pittsburgh responded with exactly the opposite, solidarity and engagement,” said David Knoll, AVP of Public Affairs, Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. “We are grateful to the Co-op’s board for their thoughtful deliberation, and to every community member and organization who made their voice heard.”

One detail from this campaign deserves particular attention: among the products targeted for boycott was an olive oil produced by a nonprofit of Arab and Jewish women in Israel dedicated to building bridges and modeling cooperation between communities. The BDS effort would have harmed exactly the kind of peace-building work our community believes in and seeks to support.
