Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh Awards $10,000 Emergency Grant to JFCS to Support Kosher Food Access

Kosher food provided to individuals and families in need following the expiration of SNAP benefits

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh today announced a $10,000 emergency grant to Jewish Family & Community Services (JFCS) to help provide kosher food to individuals and families in need following the expiration of SNAP benefits on November 1.

This grant will allow JFCS to procure additional kosher food for distribution through its programs, ensuring that vulnerable members of the Jewish community continue to have access to culturally appropriate and nutritious meals during this critical period.

“Thanks to the generosity of our donors who have contributed to the Federation’s Foundation, we are in a position to support JFCS as they step up to meet the urgent needs of our community,” said Jeff Finkelstein, President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. “We are proud to help JFCS reach more people who are struggling right now.”

These funds were made available from a grant pool created to respond quickly and effectively to international, national and/or local disasters.

JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry is already experiencing the largest jump in demand for food in our 25-year history,” said Jordan Golin, CEO of JFCS. “The loss of SNAP benefits will further exacerbate this. The Federation’s support will make it possible for us to meet demand by expanding hours and purchasing additional food.”

This grant reflects the Federation’s mission to build a flourishing Jewish community where everyone feels included, supported and inspired — especially during times of need.
