New Year Brachot

Candle Lighting

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha’olam, asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel yom hazikaron.

Blessed are You, Eternal One, Creator of the Universe, who makes us holy with your blessings and commands us to kindle the lights of the Day of Rememberance.

Following Candle Lighting

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha’olam shehecheyanu, v’kiyemanu, v’higiyanu lazman hazeh.

Blessed are You, Eternal One, Creator of the Universe, who has kept us alive and sustained us and enabled us to reach this time.

Blessing Over Apples and Honey

On Rosh Hashanah we eat apples dipped in honey to symbolize the sweetness of the New Year. Blessing over apples (and other fruit from trees):

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha’olam, borei pri ha’etz.

Blessed are You, G-d, Creator of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the tree.

When dipping the apple in honey we recite an intention for the New Year:

Yehi ratzon milfanecha, Adonai Eloheinu v’elohei (avoteinu v’imoteinu) (avoteinu) shetechadesh aleinu shanah tovah umetukah.

May it be your will, our G-d and the G-d of our ancestors, to make new for us a good and sweet year.
