Just as the new television season, for those of us who still watch broadcast television, is rolling out, our fall Jewish holiday season is coming to an end with this weekend’s Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. I have such fond memories of going to synagogue with my family on Simchat Torah: flags mounted on dangerous wooden sticks that could take out an eye, candied apples and enough candy to destroy our teeth and permission to simply have fun. And what was the reason for all that celebration? We finished a book. Actually, we finished the book—the Torah.
In Jewish tradition, completing a sacred text calls for a siyyum—literally, a completion, but really a celebration. Simchat Torah reminds us of something even more powerful: finishing is also beginning. The moment we complete the Torah, we start again.
Our Federation calendar follows that same rhythm. We launch a campaign, complete it, celebrate what we accomplished together and begin again because the work of building a flourishing Jewish community never stops. Last year, this community raised a record $14.4 million. Those dollars help sustain Jewish education, care for older adults and vulnerable community members, strengthen security, support Jewish life here at home and stand with Israel and Jewish communities around the world.
Now the 2027 Community Campaign begins, and we are aiming even higher: $15 million. We cannot get there without you.
On Wednesday, October 21, I hope you will join us at The Pennsylvanian for our 2027 Community Campaign Launch*. Pittsburgh’s own Billy Porter will be our special guest, and throughout the evening you will hear powerful stories of what your generosity makes possible. Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to make your 2027 Campaign commitment and help write the next chapter for Jewish Pittsburgh.
This should be a celebration—joyful, meaningful and unmistakably Federation. Because when our community shows up for one another, we do extraordinary things together.
Thank you for being part of it, and thank you for helping us begin again with strength, purpose and hope.
