America at 250. Federation at 113. Building the Future Together.
July 4, 2026
As America marks its 250th anniversary, we're reflecting on the freedoms, opportunities and sense of belonging that have drawn generations of Jewish families to this country and the role our community has played in building a Jewish future here in Pittsburgh.
For Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh President and CEO Jeff Finkelstein, that story is deeply personal.
His grandfather, Irving, arrived alone in Boston at 20 years old. He had little formal education and no guarantees waiting for him, but he found something invaluable in America: opportunity. He learned a trade, worked with dignity into his 70s and built a life rooted in freedom and possibility.
Many members of Irving's family who remained in Latvia were murdered during the Holocaust. Because he came to America, future generations of his family were given the chance to thrive. His story of survival to opportunity is one shared by countless Jewish families who found refuge and hope on American soil.
"America wasn't just opportunity; it was survival. I still believe in that promise — as a proud American and a proud American Jew."
— Jeff Finkelstein, President & CEO, Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh
In 1912, Jewish leaders in Pittsburgh came together to establish the predecessor to the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. They understood that while America offered freedom and opportunity, strong communities don't happen by accident—they are built by people who care for one another and invest in the future.
For more than 113 years, Federation has stood beside our community through moments of triumph and tragedy. Through two world wars. Through the Holocaust. Through the founding of Israel. Through the shooting at the Tree of Life building. And through every milestone of resilience, growth and renewal along the way. We helped immigrants build new lives. Through every challenge and every triumph, Federation has helped ensure that Jewish life in Pittsburgh would not only endure, but flourish.
As our nation marks 250 years of independence, we also celebrate a community dedicated to turning opportunity into reality. The American story and the story of Federation are connected by a shared belief: that when people come together with purpose, they create a stronger future for generations to come.
America gave generations of Jewish families the opportunity to dream.
Federation has helped turn those dreams into a thriving Jewish community.
That's history.
That's hope.
That's Federation.
