Amidst Chaos

War Amplifies Support Needs for Special Populations

Like any 2-and-a-half-year-old, Yedidya often sparks happiness with his heartwarming smile—but after suffering a brain bleed at birth, he has faced significant developmental challenges. Yedidya’s mom, Ashira, opened up about some of the family’s struggles, including Yedidya’s delayed development, misdiagnoses, and ineffective treatments. The turning point came with an MRI revealing the true extent of his condition: cerebral palsy.

After Yedidya was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, the family decided to relocate to Ra’anana out of necessity and in hopes of receiving more specialized care. They joined Beit Issie Shapiro, a leading Israeli organization in advancing care for individuals with disabilities. The range of therapies provided—including physio, hydro, occupational, and speech therapy—catalyzed Yedidya's progress, exceeding what the family could have achieved alone.

However, the onset of war introduced new challenges, particularly for a child-like Yedidya. The loud noises and disruption of routine have been particularly distressing. Ashira vividly describes the impact: “Since the onset of the conflict, every little noise seems to unsettle Yedidya. If a dog barks, he won’t go to sleep. Now we have to close the windows and the blinds to create a quieter, more insulated environment for him[…]It’s like he’s on high alert all the time.”

"Due to this war, noises terrify him, and the disruption is immense. But the staff has been incredible. They don’t just take care of his physical needs — they nurture his emotions and calm his fears. It's more than therapy; it's about creating a space where he feels safe and loved." — Ashira

As the family navigates these uncertain times, Ashira's story is a powerful testament to the importance of specialized care for children with disabilities and the difference it can make in their lives. Her gratitude is a testament to the vital role of supportive communities and organizations like Jewish Federations, specifically the collective effort required to ensure the well-being of the most vulnerable—especially during times like this that demand unity.

Because of donations from supporters like you, Jewish Federations of North America, the parent organization of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, provides critical funding to Beit Issie Shapiro and other communities supporting individuals living with disabilities. As needs emerge during times of war, this support is critical in making essential modifications to established programs and services by maximizing their profound impact. These communities continue to provide compassion and care to children like Yedidya, at a level that they have maintained even amidst the nationally devastating crisis.
