The Jewish Federation celebrates the recent monumental victory of the Knesset passing a significant amendment to The Food Rescue Act (2018). This amendment, led by Leket Israel, a Federation funding recipient, mandates that all government-owned companies in Israel, government offices and local authorities donate their surplus food to charities. This includes organizations such as the IDF, Police and correctional facilities.

Gidi Kroch, CEO of Leket Israel, remarked, "This achievement is groundbreaking, with the potential for global impact. It is the first law of its kind in the world to address social, economic and environmental concerns through food rescue."

Founded in 2003 by Joseph Gitler, Leket Israel has grown into the largest food rescue organization in Israel, addressing critical issues of food waste and nutritional insecurity. In 2023 alone, Leket Israel rescued and distributed over 32 million kilograms of agricultural produce. This effort not only prevents food waste but also ensures that nutritious food reaches those who need it most.

Leket Israel's impact extends beyond feeding the hungry. By rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste, the organization significantly reduces the environmental footprint associated with food production. Economically, every shekel invested in food rescue generates 7.2 times the value in return to the national economy.

The organization provides food to over 330,000 individuals weekly, including the elderly, low-income families and those affected by the war. A cornerstone of Leket Israel's success is its robust volunteer network, with around 70,000 volunteers contributing annually.

Leket Israel's work is a testament to the power of community, innovation and compassion. By donating to the Community Campaign, you help ensure that surplus food in Israel reaches those who need it most, addressing immediate nutritional needs and contributing to broader economic and environmental goals, ultimately improving the lives of all Israelis.
