Virtual Block Watch
It began like any other Sunday in Squirrel Hill—quiet streets, neighbors walking dogs, children playing. But the peace was shattered when residents discovered antisemitic flyers scattered across lawns and sidewalks. Moments later, hateful slurs echoed throughout the neighborhood, hurled by members of an antisemitic organization.
For many, it was a chilling reminder of the hate that still exists. But for the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, it was a call to action—and one we were ready to answer.
Strategic Security Infrastructure
Perhaps the antisemitic rabble-rousers didn’t realize that the Federation has in place many security mechanisms to deter crime and identify those who perpetrate it. Within minutes, dozens of community members filed reports using the Federation’s Incident Report Form, including images of the offending flyers.
Federation’s Community Security team quickly mobilized and requested video evidence from Virtual Block Watch participants—a voluntary network of home security cameras owners—to help authorities investigate what happened and who was responsible.
Thanks to Federation's close relationship with local law enforcement and the City of Pittsburgh, the incident was quickly reported, documented and escalated.
In the near future, license plate recognition technology secured through a grant to the Federation will provide law enforcement with vital information about vehicles traversing Squirrel Hill streets.
“This kind of hate has no place in our neighborhoods,” said Laura Cherner, Director of the Federation’s Community Relations Council.
“But we are not powerless. We are united and we are prepared.”

Behind the scenes, the Federation’s Director of Community Security, Shawn Brokos, coordinated with police, reviewed footage and ensured that every detail was shared with investigators. “We’ve built strong partnerships with law enforcement,” she said. “And in moments like this, those relationships matter.”
Your Camera Could Be the Key
In a world where a single video clip can bring justice, the Federation’s Virtual Block Watch Program is a powerful tool. It allows residents to register their exterior home security cameras with the Federation, creating a network of eyes that can help solve crimes and deter future ones.
If you live in Squirrel Hill or any surrounding neighborhood, your participation could make all the difference. You don’t need to patrol the streets, just be willing to share footage if something happens nearby.

Because when hate tries to divide us, our unity—and our vigilance—will always be stronger.
