When One Teen’s Voice Nourished a Community

When a 13-year-old from Squirrel Hill sat down to write a simple letter asking for “some cereal,” he probably didn’t expect it to change so many lives. But that’s exactly what happened. Inspired by the needs he saw in his community and a fellowship focused on peace and service, Ender Lin reached out to Kellogg’s asking for support for the JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry. What arrived six weeks later was extraordinary: more than 19,000 pounds of cereal delivered to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank for distribution across the region.

Ender’s message was clear and compassionate. He wrote about the importance of food in people’s daily lives and why something as basic as breakfast matters when families are struggling. His courage to ask big and the company’s decision to say yes meant that thousands of meals are now available for people facing food insecurity — right here in our neighborhoods.

At the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, we are deeply proud to stand with Jewish Family & Community Services (JFCS) as they serve this essential need. For over 80 years JFCS has been a cornerstone of support for individuals and families navigating hard times. Their Squirrel Hill Food Pantry provides nutritious food, dignity and hope for hundreds of community members each week.

Our admiration for Ender goes beyond the donation. He saw a need, used his voice for others and reminded us of what can happen when one person steps up. We are inspired by his initiative and heart. We celebrate this moment and encourage everyone in our community to keep lifting each other up. Inspired action like Ender’s makes Pittsburgh stronger, kinder and more connected.
