Supporting Israel and Pittsburgh Together

I was on a national call this week hearing updates about the impact of the war on Israelis. While it’s difficult to say that anything positive emerged from the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, one thing is clear: the more than $900 million in emergency funding invested by our collective Jewish Federation system has helped prepare Israel for this moment. With our support many new nonprofits have emerged and others have scaled up to meet today’s realities. From organizations providing mental health services to those assisting pregnant spouses whose partners have been called to military service, the country’s support infrastructure is far stronger today.

Our Federation’s long‑standing investment in programs such as the Jewish Agency for Israel’s Victims of Terror Fund has enabled an immediate response when rockets have caused death, damage and destruction. Because of our support, a Jewish Agency staff member can visit victims—typically within 24 to 48 hours—and deliver a check to help with their immediate needs. When that check is presented, families learn that this support comes from Jews around the world. It is truly remarkable and a powerful reminder of our collective spirit.

While our work in Israel is especially critical right now, we are also focused on supporting our community at home where many are feeling a heightened sense of antisemitism. After the war began, our Security Team worked closely with our agencies and synagogues to review and reinforce existing security procedures. Although there are no known threats, we remain vigilant and thoughtful, ensuring that everyone not only is safe but also feels safe.

These programs and services—both in Israel and here in Pittsburgh—are possible not only because of the dollars we raise but also because of the extraordinary volunteer and professional leadership throughout our Federation and community. We believe that developing and strengthening leadership is essential to making our organizations more effective. Several years ago with significant support from the Jack Buncher Foundation, we established the Buncher Institute for Leadership Development. We have also been long-time members of JPro, the national organization for Jewish professionals because we value ongoing professional growth.

Next Thursday evening the Buncher Institute and our local JPro chapter will co-sponsor an event featuring Dr. Deborah Gilboa—known as Dr. G—speaking on “From Urgency to Intention: How to Lead and Strengthen Through Change.” The event is open to all though registration is required. Whether you are a volunteer or professional leader, navigating and guiding change is one of the most essential skills for advancing the missions of our organizations. If you’re interested, you can register here.

Finally, since the start of the war, The Jewish Federations of North America have been offering online webinars. On Monday, March 9 at 1 p.m. Ambassador Yechiel Leiter will present a special briefing on the conflict involving Israel, the United States and Iran. Thousands across North America have participated in these sessions. If you’re interested, you can register here.

Wishing everyone a Shabbat Shalom and wishing for quiet and safety for all those in Israel and the region who are being targeted by Iranian missiles and drones.
